My natural instinct upon being woken before my alarm is to look and see what time it is. Therefore, I know that at 3:34 AM this morning, my shoes came crashing down. I didn't know what it was, but I knew something had fallen and that my heart was racing. I think there was a second crash soon thereafter, but that may have just been part of a dream. There was definitely a final crash just minutes before the alarm at 7.
Did I blog about my shoe rack a couple of months ago? I think I did. Soon after I moved here I bought a great shoe rack that fits over the closet door. In my first Williamsburg apartment it didn't work too well. With the rack hanging on the door, I could hardly get into the closet. In this apartment, however, it is as if the closet were designed for a shoe rack. It is a thing of beauty. Well, it was until 3:34 AM.
Not quite sure what to do. I must have shoes. Woman can not live by clothing alone. But I also need my beauty sleep, and I'm not sure I feel like risking another crash.
Oh - remember my recycling dilemma? Soon after I posted about that, I found the local recycling centers. Yea!! Much happier. There is even one that is open on Sunday. It is pretty far away, so I try to remember to go on Saturdays. It was kind of funny the first time I went to the far away one. I drove in and the guy working there immediately knew that I was just there to recycle (as opposed to dumping brush, etc.) He said he can always tell by the nice cars and the pretty little ladies driving them. It was pretty true. I was the only woman there, and the only one not driving a pickup.
Alrighty, time to put my shoes in their place.
It is kind of funny to follow the "first bike to work of the year" post with a "first snow" post, but that's the way things seem to work here in the south. We are only supposed to get 1-2", but I'll take what I can get. It finally feels like winter. I even walked to the grocery store for milk and whipped cream so I could make hot chocolate. I have a mint hot chocolate mix from Trader Joe's which is quite enjoyable.
I just love when everything turns white!
Never before have I biked to work in January. It was so incredibly nice out today - in the mid 70s! I really didn't have enough daylight for the trip home, but for those of us from the north, being able to bike in January is so unusual that we have to take advantage of it. I got to wear my new, neon yellow socks. So much fun.
I created a page for my library on Facebook. It has only been up for a couple of weeks, and most of the time one other person (who also works here) and I have been the library's fans. Today I took a look and saw that Nicolas Sarkozy is now also a fan. Next time I am in the historic district and bump into Thomas Jefferson I will have to let him know.
I can't hide this any longer: I am so friggin' glad the holidays are over. I have really been feeling like Billy Crystal's Harry Burns the past few weeks; just trying to make it from the day before Thanksgiving to the day after New Year's. Thanksgiving I actually enjoy. But if I had to rank the holidays, New Year's would be at the bottom of the list. I think Valentines Day even ranks higher, and on February 14 my mailbox is about as empty as Charlie Brown's. There really isn't anything different about December 31 than any other of the 365.25 nights of the year. Yet somehow, if you don't go out, get drunk, tune in to Dick Clark, and/or kiss someone at midnight, you are un-American. Perhaps even un-human. The only thing that puts the Happy in my Happy New Year is the fact that it is O-V-E-R.
So you guessed it, no resolutions for me. I embrace making changes to your life throughout the year. And if you make changes when you want to, instead of when a calendar tells you to, you are more likely to stick with them.
I actually find Labor Day to be a much more natural turning point. Perhaps that is because, having started Nursery School at age 3, I have spent something like 71% of my life as a student. Might also have to do with my birthday. But life really changes in September. The weather changes, our activities change. That is really the time to chart a new course. Since I can never get excited about sending Christmas cards, maybe this year I will send out Labor Day cards. Certainly will be a shorter line at the post office.
Meant to post about this a long time ago: Sex and the City movie trailer! Yea!!
Last night I went to see Charlie Wilson's War. It was pretty good. The best laugh I got, though, was from the trailer for 27 Dresses.
[Some random woman]: It must be so hard
to watch your younger sister get married before you.
Katherine Heigl: Yes, then I remember that I still get to have hot hate sex with random strangers and I feel so much better.
I'm definitely going to have to work that into my Maid of Honor speech.
